After serving three tours of duty in Vietnam (USMC) and receiving an Honorable Discharge in1970, Derek Forman began his lifelong career in healthcare after studying Business Administration/Management at Santa Monica College and California State Northridge. Forman was recruited by American Hospital Supply (AHA) in 1973 as General Manager of its San Francisco Wells National division and in 1975 was made Senior Director with responsibility for all Operations in the United States from Detroit to the Hawaiian Islands with 16 direct reports and 650 indirect reports. Leaving American Hospital Supply in September of 1977 he founded Allen Technologies where in 1980 he pioneered the concept of using Interactive Technology at the patient bedside. This technology (Platform I or P1) soon became the industry standard for educating patients and was known as the technology to Enhance the Patient Journey to Better Health.

In 1982 P1 was introduced to Australia and a sister company was formed in Sydney (Allen Australia). In 1986 both companies were sold to a private Australian investment firm, which then went public on the Sydney Stock Exchange. Forman was retained as a board member of the public company and remained as Chairman/CEO of Allen US.

In 1989 Forman re-acquired ownership of Allen US after which he acquired competitors, AmeriData in 1997, Healthway Interactive in 2002 and HCORP in 2003. Combined with the reacquisition of Allen these acquisitions placed Allen as the leading provider of Interactive Bedside Technologies in Acute Care Hospitals in North America.

In 2006 Forman Sold 24% of Allen to Fundamental Capital and in 2007 Fundamental Capital acquired100% of Allen where he continued as Founder/Chairman of Allen until 2019. Forman retired from Allen after 41 years in January 2019.

In February 2019 he founded a new startup, Clear/Focus Innovations, whose emphasis is on the emerging market of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robotic Technologies for Acute Healthcare and Assisted Living Facilities.
